About
Baux and Bone was created in 2022 by Emma Burluraux, combining a love of design, making and dogs.
After many years as an accessories designer working with brands and manufacturers in the UK, Italy, India and the Far East, Emma wanted to return to the craft of working with leather by hand, and using UK materials and suppliers to both support a heritage industry and to make sourcing as local as possible. In 2023 Emma was awarded a grant by The Leathersellers Foundation to seek training to develop her own craft and making skills.
All items are designed and made from start to finish by Emma in her small studio in South East London, using traditional hand tools and techniques used in saddlery making. Everything is tested by Emma or her lurcher Margot, who is also the brand muse! Items are made to order or in very small batches, avoiding overproduction or waste.
Baux and Bone believe in supporting and collaborating with other UK companies, from working with them to source leather, buckles and hardware, developing knife patterns for hound collars, creating solid brass embossing stamps, and providing the organic cloth bags and rubber stamps used in packaging.
Baux and Bone only uses vegetable tanned leathers which are a by-product of the farming industry and would otherwise go to waste if not used. Items are finished with brass hardware for durability. Vegetable tanned leather does not use chrome in its production and will last and improve with age, developing it's own 'patina'. When an item does reache the end of it's life it is biodegradable, unlike synthetic alternatives.
