Leather and care
THE LEATHER
The leather we use is high quality full grain, predominantly sourced from one of the oldest suppliers in the UK. We only use vegetable tanned leather, which is the most environmentally friendly way of tanning leather, as opposed to chrome tanning which is far less sustainable. The hides we use are a by product of the farming industry, no cows are reared for their skin, and these hides would otherwise go to landfill if not used. The tanneries that produce the leather we use are all part of consortiums which pay close attention to issues such as animal welfare, working conditions, waste treatment, sustainability and environmental impact. Some of these tanneries can trace skins back to a specific farm, and this ability is increasing.
We do not use 'vegan leather' as this is either made from oil based petrochemicals or, excepting mirum, uses plastic to bond plant fibres into a material. Ongoing we are following developments in leather alternatives and will investigate using these only if they do not contain plastics, are durable, and are fully biodegradable. Currently non of the available options cover all of these criteria.
Vegetable tanned leather is a natural product which will soften and age gracefully over time, developing it’s own unique patina. Our leather is natural full grain and will sometimes show natural textures/markings, this is part of the leather and not a fault.
CARE
We add an initial protective balm layer to all our dog collars to help with water resistance, but they are not suitable for frequent swimmers! If your collar gets very wet, remove, wipe off any excess water gently and let it dry naturally at room temperature, away from any direct heat source. To clean mud or dirt off your product, wipe with a barely damp cloth.
We recommend occasionally treating our leather collars and we like Renapur Leather Balsam which is made from natural ingredients including beeswax and jojoba oil.
